Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution GSR I - 1 of 2 Street Road Rally Car Tunes

Price: $43000 (Based on $10000 car with parts added)
Power: 400hp/6000rpm
Torque: 480.49nm/3000rpm
0-100kph/0-60mph: 4.6 Seconds
Top Speed: 245kph/152mph
Tuned at Motegi Road Course, New York, Motorland, and Nurburgring
Lap time above done at Nurburgring

Firstly I'd like to thank captainMuffins for his previous opinion on the old setup. I've tried to improve it as much as I can, using these street legal parts.

I designed this tune after watching Wheeler Dealers and seeing a Ford Sierra Cosworth pumping out 400hp, from a 200hp engine. It gave me an idea to tune a rally bred car for the track and making it as fast as possible, while keeping the costs down at the same time. This tune also works on dirt/snow.

The Evo I at stock delivers about 246hp and is fairly primitive to corner with compared to the latest Evo's like the VIII, IX and X. I increased the power with a Stage 2 Turbo which results with powerful, yet reasonably balanced engine power. The key to driving fast is to keep the revs up and shift before it hits the redline, or you will lose power.

On the track because the spring rates are limited under 5kg's, it isn't as responsive as what a stiffer spring rate delivers. But since the spring rates are low, the car performs well on dirt/snow tracks. The LSD is set so that to offer the best on the road and offroad. With it set on road tracks, it helps improve the drive when going in and out of corners. You can also have fun doing 4 wheel spins with it, while still keeping the car in control. On dirt/snow tracks the LSD feels very grippy, and tends to grip a bit more towards the front. Drivers who can't slide well would appreciate this feeling.

This is my first 4WD tune so any feedback would be appreciated.
Brette.

Part 1 of 2 Street Rally Car Tunes

The car in it's "The Stig" guise. Quite a sporty looking car and drives well for it's age.

The second street rally car tune is based on a Subaru Impreza WRX STi.

I clicked through to your site and saw the pictures of your Nissan -- looks like it's in very good shape! I currently drive a 1991 Honda Prelude Si. It's fun, despite the fact that it's FWD. I enjoy driving that era of Japanese cars.

Are you complimenting my car?! It's got like stickers saying "Lowered by Fat Chicks", "Drift Pig" and "Drift King". Haha, na it's good to know people out there like it. I've got some Skyline GTS brakes fitted all round, so when I do get a better motor it'll be ready.

I was thinking maybe of getting a Prelude like yours as my car. There are many of them selling cheap here in Australia. Only thing that scared me was the FWD. I then saw my car for $1000 near where I live and got that. Nissan S12's are much rarer than a Prelude.

GT should include full lists of cars in their games. Not half complete lists like with the Silvia's or Preludes. Only one game I know has my car, and it's a arcade drift racer. Bloody hell...

This was the first time I ever posted up setups to coincide with each other. I based it on two cars the Evo and Impreza, as they are well known rivals to each other. I really haven't planned on doing more so far, but will be soon in the future. If you want to give any suggestions please go ahead, I'm all ears.

But right now I just want to finish off some cars I've been working on for awhile. Got 1 FF, 5 FR's (one's to be a new re-posted tune), and 1 MR just waiting to be posted up. Also got a side project, a Mercury Cougar XR-7. Been going at it for awhile and I don't know if I should go all out with it, or run a balanced tune for it (like most of my setups). This may never get posted.

I may put some of these to the side to focus on another tuning battle, as these next two weekends are free for me. Thanks for your feedback.

Tuning battle? When? Where? What with?
oh and hi brette, its been a while! I tried something similar to this, but I mixed up what I was trying to do and hence it was a mess... maybe I should go re-do them.
Anyway these are quite nice, your cheap road car to sporty track car tunes are a testament to efficiency and good tuning. Problem is I could never find the evo in the used car lots...
Time to get back into GT4, as GT5 has become a serious drag at level 30, damn enduros so far apart. StigsTC

I always find the Evo 1 in the 90's used car section. Just check around after a race or so.

yea..i just tested out the car on a road track..(new york) and i just dont get it?
this car is unbelievably good on dirt courses, but when it comes to concrete and pavement, the car didnt perform as i thought it would. the only problem (or maybe its just me) was the steering..tried having fun with it by oversteering it..didnt work out so well. i guess the car has too much oversteer or something becouse it just wont turn. was this setup only for dirt or was it also compatible for the road too?? write me back..and if you say "dirt" then ill just leave it alone but if you say that is is also compatible with the road too, then ill try to give some suggetions. if thats okay with you/.. Are you sure the car doesn't work well on road courses? Because I tuned this car specifically on them. I tested the Evo at tracks like Motegi Road Course, Tokyo, Nurburgring and it seems fine to me. Go to Motegi Road Course and try to break my lap record there with the Evo.

The key to cornering with it is to turn in it as much as you can before flooring it. This is how alot of 4WD's work including this one. 4WD's mostly don't oversteer, but I do admit there can be a tad of understeer if trying to corner and accelerate hard with the Evo. From reading what you said I think your accelerating and cornering at the same time, resulting with the crappy understeer.

It's good to hear this setup is good on the dirt even though I didn't set it up for that...
But I do know how to drive in GT4, and I know this car is good on road courses. Ask Stigs, he knows I can drive.

well..it works well on dirt.. i won all the special conditions hall with it (or at least mort of it) and when i tried it out on the road (it was on new york) it had a very huge UNDERSTEERING problem. i have no doubt that you can drive, its just that i have a problem with this car. maybe its me, im not sure, im still working on it, ill be sure to try the car out on the tracks you listed above. talk to you this friday....

About the setup
Posted 04/16/2011 6:30 AM Post a reply Quote this post View Brette's info
Ah. I understand what you're talking about now captainMuffins. When I tuned this car I think I completely forgot how the shocks should of been setup. Also it was my first time doing a 4WD so I messed up with the LSD too.

Will be going to improve the setup as much as possible. Already have fixed the mistakes such as the shocks and LSD, and it no longer grip's like an ape around New York. I must say after trying the car out on the dirt, it does certainly handle like a rally car. All it would need is a closer ratio gearbox and it would sorted.

If anyone wants to try the setup, please wait until I re-post the settings up.

Brette, don't remind me how well you can drive! Took me forever for my breakthrough win in the GtVault challenges, and I think you were busy at the time as well!
Btw guys, I've found new York to be a horrid place to run 4wd road cars, i tried to run a subaru impreza there in the New York 200 miles, and the thing wouldn't turn at all, which was compounded by the fact that front tyre wear was terrible. Also doesn't help that the corners are all 90 degrees and go 3 streets wide into 3 streets wide.
Its like running at Fuji 2005, the place is so open and wide you think you should be driving it so much faster, and it feels like the car is understeering horribly, but once you tone down your arrival speed and pay a bit more respect to the tyres by being less aggresive with the throttle the times tumble and the car feels a whole lot faster. Then you find it possible to push for time through the mid-corner and exits by using the throttle with more and more vigour.
Gotta run these still, and re-tune my own "WRX vs Evo" comparison tests. But that can wait a while...
Maybe it explains some of the issues, but hopefully I've given some insight into how driving styles play into how to get speed from a car and setup.

I've tried to improve the setup with the parts used previously and the car drives much better on the track now. Can't believe I set it up before with those shock rates and LSD Vomit

The new settings are up now. Understeer is much less now, and the car is more friendly to drive. If you want the old settings here they are below:

SP: 4.6 3.4
S: 5 4
C: 2.0 1.2

LSD

Accel: Front 20 Rear 35

And that my friend Had me think of the car challege. For both GT4 and GT5. This might as well add some fun to GT5. E-mail me if you agree. But I wont start it until May 1st. Why? Because I'm out of school for summer at that time. Or text me for info 1-314-210-3949.
Have fun while you race others. If you don't why are you racing in the first place?

New GT4 or GT5 Challenge
Posted 04/21/2011 12:27 AM Post a reply Quote this post View Brette's info
If there's going to be a tuning challenge next month I should be available. If Stigs is in that would make 3 people altogether now. If it's going to be GT4 and GT5, the results will need to be seperated between the two. Different game engines will make either the GT4 or GT5 player be better or worse. I guess it could be good to see the difference of times between the games.
