Oh My God!!! What a "pain in the a**" This car was a "Pig" to tune.

Tuned for Drivng Force Pro at Laguna Seca on R3 and S3 tires.

Includes; "semi-racing exhaust and intake",and oil change to get the Hp to 638.

Ran 1' 27.508 on S3 tires with 638 Hp from a stock tune, 01/11/07
and 1' 22.870 on R3 tires the same way.

Comparo with Stefnys

So Stefnys and I get together and have a difference of opinion. He insists usng LSD with VCD is the only way to get this "Pig" of a car around the track. We chose Laguna Seca as a test bed as we are both "very" familiar with the track in real time. I have always contended that using VCD and LSD together on an AWD car would only work to disarm the two traction aides,...............

Well in this case,........ with the Audi Nuvolari quattro,....... I was wrong!! Vote to Stefnys' setup Thumbs Up

I have to agree with Stefnys. I made good use of LSD as well as Front Ballast with the VCD to get the front end of this car to hook up and pull this car out of the turns,...... thus nutralizing it's terminal understeer.

My LSD settings are quite a bit lower than Stefnys' and more rear biased, but the idea is the same as his setup. He is using the DS2 hand controller and I am on the DFP wheel/pedal setup.

Here are the Lap Times at Laguna Seca to back up my setings.

I ran 1' 27.730 on Stefnys' setup on S3 tires,
I left the Trans Auto-Set at 7, and my Racing Brakes at 7 front / 5 rear
Stefnys' setup http://www.gtvault.com/gt4/setup-view/s_sid::6119/postid::14333/

I ran 1' 27.508 on my setup, (above) on S3 tires,

and 1' 22.870 on R3 tires. Stefnys' will run R3's and get back to me with his times.

I ran a 1.23.115 on R3 tires on your set up. Not far off but still on pace. Nice set up dude. I still don't like AWD cars. I always tune mine to run more like a RWD car. Makes it easier on me in the end. But still nice set up.

Brian, I either need to get a wheel/pedal set up or practice more. These are fast times you put down.

I ran following times on my setup :

-on S3 tires : 1'30.007
-on R3 tires : 1'25.104

I will try your setup tonight and let you know. I can already say that I'm more than a bit intrigued by the use of ballast. I'll put my auto trans to 7 as well - I think I left mine at 9- which might improve my times slightly. I'll also fit the twin plate and semi racing flywheel, as it might improve accelearation, without transmitting the torque too abruptly. Stefan

Ballast Balance vs Ballast Weight

Check this out,......
This is an interchange between me and another member about this balance/weight deal.

Is Ballast Balance : location?..... and is Ballast Weight: additional wieght, (the kind that is added to even the racing field in Trans Am Championships)?

DTW relpied:
Yes that is exactly what it is.

As a tuner can we use the ambient weight of the car to tune with.
Race car designers move oil tanks, fuel cells, batteries and anything else that isnt nessesary where it is, to move "center of balance". Is that what we're talking about here?

All this moving around can make huge differences in handling without adding any extra weight, and could account for "Ballast Balance" changes in handling withoutadding Ballast Weight. Just a thought?

There seems to be a growing debate about that question. If you ask some tuners (therat1989 we could use some of your input here) they say that it must be possible as adjusting the balance seems to affect the car. In my testing I have not seen this happen. I have tested this on an MR, FF, and FR and have gone from one extreme (full adjust to the front and then the back) and have seen no change in the way the car handles. I suppose only time and more input from others testing this will solve the issue.

Updated 02/16/2007 10:01 AM Post a reply Quote this post View Toreno's info
The ballast balance without weight DOES make a difference!I did all testing at Suzuka Full

BF:Ballast Front BB:Ballast Back

FR:Toyota Supra
BF:Added Steering in corners but less traction at the rear('Thumbs Down')
BB:Not much Over/understeer difference,grip is increased('Question?')

RR:RUF Yellowbird
BF:More Steering response, more traction in high speed turns('Thumbs Up')
BB:High speed steering is almost impossible('Thumbs Down')

MR:NSX-R
BF:Same as RR'Thumbs Up')
BB:More tail out turns, more fun.Sudden High speed turns can spin you out really badly.('Question?')

4WD:Mitsubishi EVO VI Tommi Makinen
BF:Accelerating is faster,turn in more accurate('Thumbs Up')
BB:Braking power increased,added understeer('Thumbs Up')

FF:Dodge Neon
BF:More oversteer ny about 20%,faster acceleration('Thumbs Up')
BB:Rear grips in corners,adding a little understeer('Question?')
All setups for Dualshock 2's.

Thats a very good guide. I still think that you don't need any extra ballast weight to change the characteristics of the car with the ballast position. Just MHO
