Gran Turismo 5 shown at GamesCon Germany
Updated 08/21/2009 5:40 AM Post a reply Quote this post View GT2000's info
As some of you may know GamesCon started this week in Germany. Its basically the Euro edition of E3 that runs in the US where Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo show of there latest hardware and software.

Sony showed of there new PS3 slim which is retailing at £250 here in the UK on the 1st September 2009 which is the same price as the new PSP GO. The PS3 slim will have a 120GN HardDrive but will NOT have BC support for your PS2 games.

Also at the event was GT-PSP which was being played from the in car view of a clio at the ring and GT5 was also on show for people to play. Still no confirmation of a release date but I'd expect us to see it by the end of the year.

For more info and some fantastic video clips of all things GT check out www.gtplanet.net
Also be sure to check out www.eurogamer.net for other news from the show.

It's flat out retarded there is no backward compatibility. Who wants all these consoles cluttering up their living room?

Totally agree Kerr, and with the size of the PS3, its pretty stupid. What reasons are there for NOT having backwards compatibility?? It makes no sense to not have it!!(if that makes any sense) Its got to be a marketing tactic, I just can't see the logic in doing so, if anything you'd increase sales of PS3s, and they cost heaps more than a PS2!! Also, good to see you around again Kerr,

As do I

I bit the bullet long ago when the original 60GB PS3 was $499 US. I'm glad I did, and I think it's deplorable for Sony to strip features from newer versions of the PS3. It's funny, I just ran across an article on Ars Technica about how the original 60GB unit, while no longer sold, is sought after specifically for its backward compatibility feature.

If only I'd spent the $799 AUS to buy one... I'd have had no fun anyway. For some reason the new PS3 slimline is being sold at prices under $500 AUS, so logically I made the right choice by picking it up while getting GTA IV with it (for free) totalling $496 when the game cost $120 anyway. To the effect I made a PS3 cost a mere $380, half of the original PS3. What does the PS3 slimline retail in America for? I heard $500 US but that doesn't make sense.

Stigs - the slim PS3 retails for $299 USD. Sony currently has a massive marketing campaign going on. I've seen this commercial only about a hundred times now. Roll Eyes Sarcastically

Converting $299 USD, I come up with $343.60 AUD, so I've no idea why the price is comparatively exorbitant.

Thanks Kerr,
Being in Australia, rather sucks in that respect.
Essentially, every game ever created will cost a whole lot more if you buy in Australia, I can't remember the reason (probably some stupid tax) but it comes out somewhere near 150% of the prices in the US. Also, it comes out later, and sometimes with less features, but what can you do?
Oh, did you hear the rumours about a 250GB Ps3 slimline? Not impressed I will be...

I wonder if I could create a "lower taxes on everything fun" political party... I mean, the 'Australian Communists' exist as a party...
(If that makes no sense, sorry - different political system)

That's really not a good situation for you Aussies, I feel for you. The thing about bigger HDDs in (at least the original) PS3 was that end users could replace them on their own, so jacking up the price for a larger HDD is not the best move IMO.

Yes, the communist reference makes sense. Smile

The reference wasn't about communists, it was about the fact that it is a political party that could theoretically could be voted into power. (I am fairly sure every American knows about communism) I couldn't think of a better 'joke' party, but there was one a few years back that actually had some good support for no real cause... wait, it was the jedi party. They didn't get any seats in parliment, but they got very close. Didn't want people thinking I was taking a cheap shot at communism.
Hmm, I noticed that there was a section of the PS3 slimline that I thought came out... Aparently it is the HDD, maybe I could replace it with a bigger one if I need to. I shall have to investigate, but I suspect it would have its own problems, like voiding the warenty or something.
Thanks Kerr,

No worries, I doubt many US readers would take it as such. In the US, it would never have been taken that way as "communism" during the Cold War has ideologically been replaced by "terrorist" in the War On Terror. In other words, the black to our white or the evil to our good.

I've no idea on the slim PS3, but replacing the HDD in the original did not void your warranty.
