New Feature - Autocomplete for Quick Car Search
Updated 01/28/2008 8:47 AM Post a reply Quote this post View Kerr's info
It's been a long while since I've introduced any new features here on GTVault. One of the more useful things I've seen in the past couple years has been AJAX based suggest or autocomplete on text fields. I've added autocomplete to the Quick Car Search form to streamline the process of finding setups. It's real simple:

  • Type at least a couple characters into the Quick Car Search form (look up!).
  • Any cars matching your search string appear in a drop down list below the form.
  • Keep typing more characters to narrow the results list.
  • You can search for basically anything: Make, Car Name, even Year.
  • Click an item to go directly to that car's setup list. (You're redirected to the car's info page if no setups exist)
  • If you don't want to use the autocomplete feature, click the "Go" button as you normally would to view the search results page.
Give it a try and let me know what you guys think!

Browser compatibility note - I've tested in various browsers, including IE6, IE7, Firefox 1.5 & 2 and Safari Win 3 beta. This covers over 90% of the user base here, however I don't have access to Safari on Mac, so Safari Mac users let me know whether the autocomplete works.

PSP Users - I've noticed about 3% of site traffic is coming from visitors using the PSP browser. Due to time constraints I haven't developed a WAP or small screen version of GTVault. I am curious how "browseable" GTVault is on the PSP, so feel free to sound off if you're one of those users.

Kerr:

When we type in characters, yes, auto-complete works and lists the relevant cars, but given a sec or two, the text turns white on the yellow background in the suggestion box and it is nearly unreadable.

{correction} If there is only one car suggestion, then that box is white over yellow.
This also is the case for the current selected car.{/correction}

Nice feature addition, though. Thanks!

MasterGT - sorry to hear you were having problems with the active item text. I tested in IE6/7, FF1.5/2 and Opera 9.25 and didn't experience that issue. What browser are you using?

The text on the active item should be black. I made a couple changes to the styling, so please try refreshing the page by hitting F5 and let me know if the text remains black on all items.

Thanks for the feedback!

Sorry, I should have specified the browser. I am pretty sure it was FireFox 2.0.0.11, but when I just checked now, the problem did not surface. I also checked SeaMonkey now, just in case I was using it during a test, but not even it caused the problem.

Must have been a fluke. If I see it again, I will pay more attention to the details.

All right, no problem. I haven't used SeaMonkey at all, but have heard about it. How do you like it? I've taken to using my Gmail account almost exclusively, so my need for Thunderbird is dwindling fast. Otherwise I'd probably give it a whirl.

SeaMonkey is the old Netscape 7.2 updated with security patches from FireFox, etc, so it does have some issues with modern web structures. The main reason I use it is because of Composer, the HTML editor mode that was not included with later versions of Netscape. Despite Composer's remaining bugs, after all of these years, I still continue to use it because it is 4.1 compliant, even though PSPad or even CoffeeCup are better editors.

Another reason I am looking at SeaMonkey is because of all of the new portable software becoming available, to be installed on USB mem-sticks. Finding the right mix takes time because we get comfortable with our PC software and we want as good programs on the mem-sticks. We also need time to migrate some of our personal data, such as custom dictionaries and bookmarks, and to learn about the limitations (such as Windows browsers won't let you use relative paths).
Cheers,

Yeah, it's hard giving up a good editor once you've found one. I've been there a couple times over the years.

I use FireFox Portable on a flash drive for some situations. It works pretty reasonably, but flash drives just don't compete with the speed of internal hard disks. I use the Foxmarks plugin with FF to synchronize my bookmarks across five separate installations... very handy. So for me that leaves custom dictionaries as the last vestige of dealing wiith local machine based issues.

Caught Foxmarks just after a big bug fix update, but it sounds as if some people have had a rocky experience with it. I could have used something like this, after all of the bookmarks I've lost over the years. Thanks for the tip!

FWIW, I've been using Foxmarks for well over a year with absolutely 0 problems. In fact, it's one of the few FF extensions I haven't had a problem with, knock on wood.

therat1989 - How's it goin? How are things at Forza Garage? I started to play Forza 2 but I've since been sidetracked by way too many things. I'd like to get back into it sometime though.

GTtuner - thanks, man! Are you playing GT5P? I have it but haven't had a chance to play it a lot. What a beautiful game though. I just finished up A class and started S, but now my PC has serious problems so I have to work on fixing it. Roll Eyes Sarcastically

@Kerr: Not really, dude. I, sadly, don't have a PS3 yet.
I play my cousin's sometimes. You know, life gets to us all. Arrgh.

We need a favicon.

You know, the little icon next to the site url in modern browsers. If you want, I can make a nice one and spit out an .ico file and necessary html.

I have gotten into web design these days.

GTtuner - You're welcome to have a hand at creating a favicon. Something like the GT logo would be nice.
