Sony PS3 price drop... X360 to follow?
Posted 07/10/2007 6:24 PM Post a reply Quote this post View Kerr's info
If you've been on the fence about getting a PS3 due to price, as some of you I'm sure know Sony has dropped the price of the 60GB PS3 from $599 US to $499 US. Amazon.com is already offering the new lower price white most other retailers have yet to do so. The forthcoming 80GB PS3 will now occupy the $599 price slot.

In related news, industry analysts speculate that Microsoft will be dropping the price of all Xbox 360 offerings.
Quote:
Analyst Micheal Pachter said on Monday that Microsoft will, in fact, reduce the price of the Xbox 360 tomorrow at the start of the company's E3 press briefing. He believes the $299 Core will drop to $249; the $399 Premium to drop to $349; and the newly released $479 Elite to drop to $399 in response to lower-than-expected sales of all three systems.

Regardless of the price drop, MasterGT made a good point via e-mail about the dearth of racing titles on the PS3.

Seems that was what everyone was waiting for, but my concern is racing games, of course. There just doesn't seem to be anything worthwhile buying yet, PLUS, based on a recent comment, SONY still seems bent on doing the same two version (Classic and Premium) with on-line content sales that they canceled with GT:HD (not the current GT:HD Concept). DiRT has had poor reviews (except for graphics) and that leaves SEGA Rally Revo (and arcade game), Race Driver One (the new ToCA name) and Gran Turismo 5 (and its Prologue, due in a few months). Not a lot to look forward too in the immediate term.

I have to say I agree with his thoughts. So, is anyone who was on the fence before going to jump in and buy a PS3 at the new $499 price point?

PS3 Pricing

Until the new GT5 comes out, there is no reason to buy yet. The GT5 has to be a complete game and not a buy one track or buy cars either.

I am interested in the new F1, but not to the point of buying the new system.

Because of the new quest for GB, I am expecting another drop in price for the 60 and another hike in GB. When they reach a 300 or 400 like computers, the 60 should be very affordable to the point of obsolete.

If you only play GT5 and maybe other racing games, then 60 is plenty of room even with new graphics and extensive Replays saved.

500 is alot more reasonable. But still 100 dollars too much. When it drops to 400 I will buy one. Which I suspect will happen around the same time as GT5. Smile Maybe waiting isn't so bad after all. Nod

I think the 60GB price drop is a good thing, but only time will tell its ultimate effect. Regarding the new 80GB model taking the high price point, I think $100 for 20GB is quite excessive. For even the mildly intrepid, I'd recommend buying the 60GB version and then replacing it with a higher capacity 2.5" serial ATA notebook hard drive. The price point for a 160GB notebook drive is just over $100, so in the end you'd gain 80GB. One thing I don't know is whether the PS3 warranty is voided by taking this action. I know that I voided the warranty when replacing the HDD in my original XBox.

I seem to recall an artical saying that the PS3 harddive could be upgraded. They never did say if it would void the warrenty or not tho. It was a year or more ago tho so I guess the hardware/design may have changed a lot.

If the Harddrive is inside the PS3 itself and it inovles tools for removal then I guess it would void the warrenty. However if its stored at the back of the console like the big old PS2 could have had and its fitted in a drive bay then I see no reason why it would void the warrenty.

Sony are expected to talk about a Euro price drop tomoz! $100 works out at around £50 here so the price could be as low as £375 here in the UK... I'd be tempeted to get one with Motorstorm and Resistance Fall Of Man Cool

No PS3 price cut for Europe
Updated 07/13/2007 4:29 AM Post a reply Quote this post View GT2000's info
Sony will not be cutting the price of the PlayStation 3 in Europe or releasing a 80GB model - instead it will be offering a Starter Pack containing the console, two games and an extra controller for GBP 425,

Due on sale in the UK on 18th July and in Europe on 1st August, the Starter Pack will offer two Sixaxis controllers and a choice of two first-party titles from a list of Resistance: Fall of Man, Motorstorm, Genji: Days of the Blade, Formula One Championship Edition and Ridge Racer 7.

Now thats not a bad deal I guess as I'd ask for Motostorm and Resistance but what am I going to do with the added controller? I have no brothers and I hate spllit screen playing. Guess I would have to speak with the manager at my local GAME store to see if I can have a HDMI or HD component cable thrown into the box instead of the added controller Unibrow

It's totally up to you, but I'd say the Europe announcement warrants its own topic...

As far as I know the new model will also have Motorstorm figured into the new premium price.
In Canada, that is worth something like $60-70, off the top of my head, for a new game.

The PS3 got its first price cut after launch in something like 263-5 days. That is unprecedented, so don't look for further cuts or a very, very long time. The XB360 still hasn't had one, right?
Cheers,

I don't believe there have been any X360 price cuts as of yet, but per the news I read the other day that may change...

Yeah, I find that it's still too expensive. I really don't see a reason not to buy the 360. I'm a die hard PS fan, but I don't see any worthwhile games for the PS that isn't out on the 360.

BTW, did anyone hear about a rumor that the Rumble feature will come back on the PS3 controller?

NVM, I didn't scroll down on the main page.

Well, Im chomping at the bit to by a 360. Im hesitant tho, with all the rumor regarding a price cut.
A relative of mine just got the MS Wireless wheel, to go with his 360. We've both been PS exclusive up to this point, and we've had our PS3's for some time now, but, we're really saddened by the state of racing and games in general, for the PS3.

Btw, the MS Wireless wheel, while an improvement over previous wheels for the Xbox, doesnt compare to the DFP, much less the G25, IMO. We both felt that way. I may be buying a 360, but, I doubt I'll spend the $$ for the wheel.

Now, if only they would drop the Premium to $349, with Forza2 bundled Smile

Looking forward to using my DFP on Prologue tho.

Yeah I feel the same way about the dearth of games on the PS3. Mine basically sits there, the shiny black finish collecting dust.
