SPOTTED - New GT-R (ES?)
Updated 05/23/2006 10:21 PM Post a reply Quote this post View Kerr's info
Living in the Midwest, one doesn't have a lot of opportunity to see relatively rare cars. There's a guy with a black Diablo that I see often, I've seen a Lingenfelter modified C5 a couple times, and then there are a few Ferraris and other exotics sprinkled about. One car I can honestly say I've never seen around here is a GT-R. While at lunch in a ritzy area with a friend, I was fortunate enough to spot my first GT-R ever west of the Mississippi and east of, say, Colorado. I was even lucky enough to snap off a pic with my camera phone before he sped off into the horizon.

It looked different than most GT-R's, plus I think it had been modified by some aftermarket shop as it had the extra "ES" suffix. I can only guess at what that means - "Extra Shot"? Does anyone have more information on this car? Did I happen upon the upcoming stateside version of the GT-R? I know that Nissan has a big presence in Tennessee, but I'm not very close to those parts y'all.

Can't find anything on a GT-R ES, and based on the style of lettering I think your seeing some aftermarket work. Most likely he stole the GT-R badge from another car, or bought one somewhere, and stuck it on his car. LOL

Without the rest of the car you can't really tell what car it is.

Damn, settle down boys, its not that funny. I think you can give Kerr and bit more credit than thinking a car was a GT-R because someone pasted the symbol on a Civic.

From this photo I highly doubt its a Skyline. None of the parts look right from the body seam and all that. However I have seen 4 door versions of it in Hong Kong and the body styling could be slightly different.

Looks very much like badge engineering to me. ES could always be the badge of a Galant. The brake light look very similar to one. Look at the right side light.

MSN has a whole bunch of photos of the Galant.

As I said before not having the whole car really complicates things.

if you're sure it was a GT-R, do you happen to remember the generation? With those body lines, I'm leaning toward R33, or even R32.

As for the ES badges, they look like something Mitsubishi, maybe even Dodge, would use. Definitely NOT a Nissan thing.

There was a hardtop GT-ES in production in the 70's or 80's (?). Maybe this was a retro style body kit for some die hard fan. Kerr did the body have an "olde" type look to it?

haha, I saw one of those yesterday, it also had a big fartcan and a bunch of stickers. i hate those 16-17 year old kids who think their civics can be fast.

That's definitely off a Mitsubishi Galant. We've got one same body style and color at my step-dad's shop currently. Yes, it's the ES trim too. Maybe when I'm bored later I'll post the picture I took, or if not you can all just look for yourselves elsewhere & see.

The answer is HOMO. LOL

And that doesn't look like a skyline rear end to me. I may be mistaken, though. The GTR trunk area is flat, and you can't see the tail lights at all in this pic. Unless thay are totally covered. And if that is the long tail light, I've never seen a GTR like that before, only the roundies.

I have one even better for you all.

Here in the great state of Missouri there is a young man (approx 17-18) who has a white Ford Mustang. Yes, just a 'stang.. V6.. who has the GT-R Emblem on each side where the Mustang logo was...

oh but it gets better..

Front and center on the hood is a Mercedes-Benz emblem.

I've lost all hope.

Poeple like that have serious issues. I can see de-badging your car, but not re-badging it. That's just plain rediculous.

there's a black Ranger around here with a Mercedes emblem in the grill. The first time I saw it, I had to really think hard about it..."I didn't know Mercedes made a pickup truck!" LOL

It's nice to see that some people got the joke! NSXType-R was the first to mention that a Mitsubishi Galant ES was the victim of this rebadge. I'm sorry I don't have a prize. I've always thought it stupid to rebadge at all. It's one thing to slap a Type-R badge on a Honda or a GT on a Mustang, but I always crack up when I see cross brand rebadging like on this Galant and the numerous other examples on the road.

Here is a funny site that pokes fun at the guys that spend all their $ on aesthetic mods -- http://www.riceboypage.com/ It hasn't been updated in years, but still serves as a good example of what not to do to a car.

i have a 96 blazer as a daily driver and i took the gold bowtie in the front grille and replaced it with a black bowtie emblem. now seriously is that considered rebadging?

I would consider that totally acceptable. You've just changed the color of your Chevy emblem. I hate gold anyway. I would change it too.
