Incorrect weight for the new Beetle Posted by Kerr 01/21/2012 10:11 AM
I received a note from MasterGT that the weight for the new Beetle in GT5 is much higher than it should be.

Gran Turismo 5 DLC Pack 3 cars added to the GTVault database Updated by Kerr 01/12/2012 10:21 PM
As some of you may have heard, Sony recently announced DLC Car Pack 3 for Gran Turismo 5. The new cars on offer will be:
  • Nissan Leaf G '11
  • Aston Martin V12 Vantage '10
  • Jaguar XJR-9 LM Racecar '88
  • Lamborghini Aventador LP700-4 '11
  • Mini Cooper S Countryman (R60) '11
I entered the basic information for these cars in the GTVault database, for tuners who want to get cracking on setups straight away.

The only thing that looks weird to me is that, as far as I can know, the Jaguar XJR-9 LM Racecar '88 is already available. I have a copy of the car myself. Maybe it's a special edition or something.

There will also be a Speed Test Course Route X, part of the "Speed Test Course Pack" DLC, for download. This is far more exciting news for me, as I miss doing 1/4, 1 mile or top speed runs in Gran Turismo 4. This track should've been included in Gran Turismo 5 proper in my opinion. Midfield Raceway as well.

DLC release dates are set for January 17 in North America, and January 18 in Europe (and elsewhere?).

The YouTube DRIVE channel featuring The 24 Hours of Nürburgring Experience Updated by Kerr 01/03/2012 11:13 PM
Hey all, I just watched a cool video on the 24 Hours of Nürburgring. It's part of a new YouTube channel named DRIVE that just launched a few days ago. The video is a nice glimpse into what the race is about. I'd love to attend this race one day.

I currently drive a 1991 Honda Prelude, which I love. It's in great shape, unmolested by ricers, and is now old enough to get looks from old school Honda fans. That said, someday it will die and need to be replaced. I think I may have found that replacement.

It's been a long time since Toyota released a car at which I cast more than a sideways glance. However, I think the new Toyota 86 (JP) / Toyota GT-86 (EU) / Scion FR-S / Subaru BRZ is beautiful. It has all the attributes I'm looking for: RWD, manual transmission, relatively balanced weight distribution, low center of gravity, and it's super cheap. Sure it has only 200HP, but aftermarket options will likely be many. Further, Scion has announced that they intend to make new variants of the FR-S available each model year. Hopefully those will transcend trim levels to include warranty backed suspension and performance upgrades.

The story behind the project is quite interesting, especially about how it was almost scrapped. I've read quite a few articles on its first drives. Most accounts are overwhelmingly positive. Toyota may have tweaked suspension in their variant, but what I find most interesting is that the Subaru BRZ will be the sole RWD, ahem non-4WD, car in their lineup. I personally prefer the Toyota variant from a style perspective.

I've been driving the Gran Turismo version, the Toyota 86 GT '12, released as a bonus with the 2.02 update. It's clearly not intended to be a powerhouse, but it excels at low-mid speed twisty tracks like Eiger Nordwand. The handling is superb, bone stock. What a fun car!

I've been considering some changes to the Gran Turismo 5 Setup Form and wanted to get your feedback. First off, how many people use the "Collapse" view of the setup? I use it almost exclusively. With that in mind, some sections are mostly blank since they don't have a lot of content. I've thought about combining some sections like:

  • General and Track & Performance
  • Engine, Intake, Exhaust and Turbo Kits
  • Suspension, Brakes and Tires

This would reduce the number of times you have to change tabs in the collapsed view.
The downside is that I designed the Setup Form to exactly match the sections used within Gran Turismo 5. So making these changes would break that logic. Thoughts?

This is interesting news regarding DLC for those who have multiple PSN accounts. According to the European PlayStation site, DLC purchases will be tied to the account used to make the purchase.

The DLC released on October 18th is tied to the Account ID used to purchase the DLC. It is not possible to use the DLC with accounts other than the one that was used to make the actual purchase. Therefore please make sure to purchase the DLC with the account that is used to play Gran Turismo 5.

Well that pretty much speaks for itself, no?

EDIT: Latest news from Kazunori Yamauchi indicates that in December, GT5 DLC can be used by any account on the PS3 console used to make the purchase. This is good news!

Gran Turismo 5 support is up and running here at GTVault! Feel free to begin posting your setups at any time.

Please note that the mechanics of posting a setup have changed dramatically. The new setup form and detail view closely follow the tuning screens in GT5. This change takes up more space on-screen, which will require some scrolling to get all the information required. To mitigate this issue, I've added a button named "Collapse View" that, when clicked, collapses the view with major sections tabbed at the left.

Clicking the button again expands the view to its original state. I tried for some time to shoehorn the new GT5 specific items into the current views, though I never achieved satisfactory results. I know this is a major change, so let me know your thoughts. One more note: These changes only apply to Gran Turismo 5, with GT3 and GT4 screens remaining as they were.

With everyone excited about the release of Gran Turismo 5 Spec 2.0, I timed the GTVault Gran Turismo 5 rollout to coincide with the game's release. This means some non-essential features are not yet implemented. Items like Race Events, detailed car information and setup validation will be released in future site updates.

With that said, the most important piece of GTVault, the ability to post and review setups, is fully functional. I appreciate everyone's patience as I refine the site in coming months. Please reply here with any feedback you may have.

Polyphony Digital is gearing up to release Gran Turismo 5 Spec 2.0 on October 11, 2011. The update includes a bevy of new features. Quoting from a short news post on GTPlanet, here is a list of major features as noted by Kazunori Yamauchi:

  • Simplified interior views added to all standard cars.
  • User control of the weather change feature.
  • Settings sheet which allows you to save multiple car settings.
  • New Spec 2.0 opening movie.
  • Improved UI response and usability.
  • Replay forward/rewind.
  • Mid-race save feature for endurance races.
  • Expanded online lounge features (narrowing down car types, shuffle races…).
  • Expanded Photo Travel features (you can now take photos of cars together with your avatar).
  • Added “NASCAR Pit Scene” stage to Photo Travel.
  • Added 11 new 2011 NASCAR models.
  • Added the Nissan GT-R N24 Schulze Motorsport (the car in which Kazunori contested the 2011 Nurburgring 24 Hours).
  • Improved physics and artificial intelligence.
  • Support for the Logitech G25/G27 steering wheel.

There are a number of great enhancements being delivered with Spec 2.0. Saving multiple settings with the setting sheet will be of particular interest to GTVault tuners. I'll be especially happy for official Logitech G27 support. It is good to see Gran Turismo 5 finally hitting 2(1).0. Smile

There is also mention of three DLC packs to be released sometime after Spec 2.0. They are referred to at this time as a "racing car pack", a "course pack", and a "racing gear pack". I don't have more concrete information on DLC at this time. I'm sure we'll know more in the coming weeks.

I just wanted to send out a quick update on Gran Turismo 5 development. I am coding the setup form, and things are going well. The new form is going to be quite different compared to the Gran Turismo 3 and Gran Turismo 4 setup forms. I am mirroring the car tuning interface in Gran Turismo 5 as much as is practical. This will make the form itself longer, but the way it flows right along with the game will be a big improvement. I have some ideas on how to deal with the added length too.
